April 2010 Microcredit Summit in Kenya From a report by PDG Steve Rickard, Founding President of Rotarian Action Group for Microcredit to the Toronto Microcredit Conference Nov 2009 pertaining to the April 2010 Microcredit Summit in Kenya.
There is much good that comes from attending microcredit summits, beyond the academic investigation and reporting of “best practices”. Attendees are amongst their peers, providing time for conversations, exploration of new ideas and familiarization with other regimes. Products are demonstrated and testimonials witnessed first hand. Rotarians have an opportunity to maximize the collective might of this assemblage of an estimated 2,000 attendees through sponsorships. The Summit organizers have identified the cost of a full sponsorship including typical transportation costs, conference registration, accommodation and meals, etc to be $2,200. Lesser packages are possible for attendees willing to share accommodation and find their own way to the Summit, in the range of $500. Identifying and then helping worthy representatives of less substantial MFIs attend the Summit is the task taken on by the Summit organizers. Donations can be made through the RESULTS website, (www.results.org). For those interested in joining a group of microcredit aficionados heading to the Summit in Kenya and perhaps wish to extend their travels briefly to include an African Safari, there is an opportunity to find out more information on the RAGM website.
